Aroundtown Continues to Expand Photovoltaics Across Its Portfolio

15.8 MWp already installed on more than 150 rooftops, generating electricity on site

Photovoltaics are playing an increasingly important role in the decarbonisation of real estate. As part of its sustainability strategy, Aroundtown is expanding renewable energy generation across its portfolio and reducing its environmental footprint. To date, photovoltaic systems with a combined capacity of around 15.8 MWp have been installed on more than 150 rooftops across some 120 properties in Germany and the Netherlands.

One example of this wider rollout is a portfolio of 16 properties let in full to ATU, one of Germany's leading car service providers. As single-tenant assets, these locations allowed landlord and tenant to coordinate closely throughout the project, which made for efficient planning and installation and means the renewable electricity generated is used directly on site. Together, the systems represent more than 1.4 MWp of installed capacity and are expected to generate 1.0 GWh of renewable electricity a year, avoiding around 284 tonnes of CO₂ in 2026.

"Decarbonising an existing portfolio calls for solutions that are both effective and scalable. Rooftop solar is a good example: it makes use of space that is already there, increases on-site generation and can be repeated across multiple properties. The rollout at 16 locations shows how close coordination between landlord and tenant turns a proven solution into a portfolio-level measure," says Limor Bermann, Chief Sustainability Officer at Aroundtown.

"The systems on our roofs supply electricity exactly when our branches need it: during the day and directly on site. This reduces the amount we draw from the grid and makes us less exposed to price fluctuations. Coordination was close from site selection through to commissioning. Aroundtown made the roof space available and drove the rollout forward, and that pays off for us at every single location," says Markus Winkler, Branch Network Development at ATU.

Rooftop photovoltaics on existing buildings combine lower emissions with greater energy resilience and support the long-term competitiveness of the properties.
